Why stainless steel for E-clips?
Retaining rings live in the groove, and grooves trap water. A shaft groove holds moisture against the ring by capillary action long after the surrounding surfaces have dried, which is why carbon steel rings so often show rust at the groove first. Corrosion there does two things: it pits the ring at its flex points, and it can seize the ring in the groove so removal deforms it. Stainless avoids both. For outdoor equipment, marine hardware, and anything that gets hosed down, the ring material matters as much as the shaft material.

Are stainless E-clips as strong as carbon steel ones?
Slightly lower in thrust rating, but close. Spring stainless does not reach the same hardness as heat treated carbon spring steel, so a stainless ring of the same size carries a bit less load. For the light to moderate loads E rings are designed around, the difference rarely governs the selection. Corrosion service usually does.
Are stainless E rings magnetic?
Spring tempered stainless retaining rings usually show some magnetic response, because the cold working and heat treatment that create spring properties change the crystal structure. A magnet sticking to the ring does not mean it is not stainless.
Can I mix a stainless E ring with a carbon steel shaft?
Yes, and it is a common pairing. In wet service the carbon steel shaft corrodes preferentially where the two metals contact, so inspect the groove area during maintenance. In dry indoor service the pairing is not a concern.
How do I remove a stainless E-clip that will not come off?
Work a thin flat blade under the closed end and lever it out sideways in the direction it went on, never axially. If it is stuck, penetrating oil at the groove and a light tap can break the bind. Cover the clip as it releases, because stored spring energy can send it flying.
What is the smallest shaft size available?
