What is Hearing Protection?
Hearing protection reduces the noise that reaches your inner ear during cutting, grinding, hammering, and other loud shop or jobsite tasks. On this page you’ll find easy-to-use earplugs and earmuffs that help you meet safe exposure levels while staying comfortable through a full shift.
Earplugs vs. Earmuffs, which Should I Use?
- Earplugs: Compact and economical; great when you wear hard hats, face shields, or welding helmets. Corded styles help prevent loss between tasks.
- Earmuffs: Fast on/off and a consistent seal without rolling plugs; ideal for intermittent noise and shared PPE kits.
- Dual protection: In extreme noise, wear plugs under muffs to increase overall attenuation.
What Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) Do I Need?
Choose an NRR that gets your effective exposure near or below 85 dBA.
- 85–95 dBA: Most quality earplugs OR earmuffs are sufficient.
- 95–100+ dBA: Higher-NRR plugs or muffs; consider dual protection for peak events.
- Follow your site’s safety plan; derate NRR per your program or regulator guidance.
How to Fit Earplugs Correctly
- Clean hands. Roll the foam plug into a tight, crease-free cylinder.
- Reach over your head to pull the ear up and back; insert the plug well into the canal.
- Hold in place 20–30 seconds while the foam expands and seals.
- Perform a quick “acoustic check”, speech and shop noise should sound noticeably softer.
How to Choose Earmuffs
- Seal & Comfort: Cushions should fully contact skin around the ear with even pressure.
- Compatibility: Verify a good seal with your eyewear, respirator straps, or hard hat.
- Adjustability: Height-adjust headband for a centered, balanced fit.
Care, Hygiene & Replacement
- Replace disposable foam plugs after each shift or when soiled.
- Wipe earmuff cushions regularly; replace cushions that crack, stiffen, or leak.
- Store PPE clean and dry, away from direct sun and oils.
Hearing Protection FAQ
Are earplugs or earmuffs better for welding?
Either works. Earplugs fit easily under helmets and shields; earmuffs are convenient for quick don/doff during setup and inspection. Choose the option that maintains a reliable seal with your helmet and eyewear.
Can I wear earplugs and earmuffs together?
Yes, dual protection is recommended for very loud environments or peak impact noise. Follow your site’s derating method to estimate combined protection.
How do I know my plugs are inserted correctly?
When properly inserted, only a small portion of the plug is visible, and sounds are clearly quieter. If the plug backs out or feels loose, refit or try a different size/style.
How often should I replace earmuff cushions?
Replace when cushions are cracked, hardened, or no longer create a uniform seal, typically every 6–12 months in regular use.
