When does the flange earn its place?
Whenever consistency matters more than a clean surface. Driving flush inserts to a uniform depth by eye is harder than it sounds: a couple of extra turns in soft grain sinks one below the surface, a knot stops another proud, and on a run of twenty the variation shows. A flange removes the judgment entirely, because the insert stops when the collar lands. That makes it the practical choice for production runs, for anyone installing inserts for the first time, and for joints where the mating part sits directly on the insert and needs a flat, consistent seat. The tradeoff is that the collar remains visible and stands slightly proud, so on a finished visible surface a flush insert looks better.

Does the flange sit on the surface or countersunk?
Normally on the surface, standing slightly proud. If you need it level, counterbore the top of the pilot hole to the flange diameter and depth so the collar drops in flush.
How much does the flange add to the height?
Only the collar thickness, which is a small fraction of an inch. It is enough to see and feel, which is why flush inserts exist, but it rarely interferes unless the mating part must sit perfectly flat against bare wood.
What pilot hole size do I need?
Specified per insert size and worth testing in scrap first. Wood species changes the result significantly, so a pilot that works in pine may split maple, and one sized for hardwood may not grip in softwood.
Can I install these in end grain?
You can, but pull-out strength is considerably lower than in face grain because end grain fibers offer less to grip. Where end grain installation is unavoidable, use the longest insert available and consider epoxy to reinforce the hole.
Which size hex key do I need?
It varies with insert size. Check the specification for your insert, and use a key or bit that fully engages the socket depth, since a partially seated key will round the socket under installation torque.
Are metric and inch inserts interchangeable?
No. The internal thread must match your bolt, and the external thread and pilot hole differ between sizes. Order the insert that matches the hardware you intend to use.
