Carbon Steel Retaining Rings for Shafts & Bores

Retaining rings (snap rings) seat in a machined groove on a shaft or inside a bore to hold bearings, gears, pulleys, and other components in axial position. Plain carbon steel provides a dependable, economical choice for general-purpose assemblies.

Axial Retention Controls endplay and keeps parts located without bulky collars.
Internal & External Styles Fit grooves inside housings (internal) or on shafts (external).
Common Profiles Standard snap rings and E-clips for fast installation and service.
Serviceable Design Install/remove with retaining-ring pliers or flat tools as specified.
Plain Steel Economy Carbon steel construction for strength in everyday applications.
Size Coverage Select by shaft/bore diameter and matching groove dimensions.

How to Select a Retaining Ring

Match ring style and size to your shaft/bore and groove geometry.

Choose style: Internal (bore) or External (shaft); E-clip for quick side-mounting on shafts with access.
Confirm nominal diameter (shaft or bore) and verify groove location and width.
Check groove depth & wall to ensure adequate seating and thrust capacity.
Select ring thickness to match the groove and component load requirements.
Consider environment; plain steel is for general indoor use—choose coated/stainless alternatives where corrosion is a concern.

Common Applications

Retaining bearings, bushings, and seals on shafts
Locating gears, sprockets, and pulleys
Pin and clevis retention with E-clips
General MRO, fixtures, and light machinery

Installation & Safety

Use the correct tips on retaining-ring pliers; wear eye protection.
Do not over-expand or over-compress the ring; avoid exceeding elastic limits.
Ensure the ring is fully seated in the groove and flush around the circumference.
Inspect grooves and rings for wear, chips, or deformation during service.
