Why choose stainless for internal retaining rings?

A bore groove is the worst place in an assembly to have a corroding part. It is enclosed, so condensation collects and does not dry out, and it is hidden, so you will not see the problem until you open the housing. Rust does two things there. It pits the ring at the flex points, which can leave a permanent set so the ring no longer springs tight against the groove, and it seizes the ring in the groove so removal deforms it past reuse. In a sealed gearbox or pump housing you may not open the assembly for years, which is exactly when you want the ring to still come out cleanly on the first attempt.

How do I measure for an internal retaining ring?

Measure the bore diameter with calipers, then measure the groove diameter at its base and the groove width. The ring is ordered by bore size. Do not measure the old ring's outside diameter and order that number, since an uninstalled internal ring always measures larger than the bore it fits.

Are stainless internal rings as strong as carbon steel?

Slightly lower in thrust rating, since spring stainless does not reach the hardness of heat treated carbon spring steel. For most housing applications the margin is comfortable, and the environment usually decides the material rather than the load rating.

Are stainless retaining rings magnetic?

Often yes. The cold working and heat treatment that produce spring properties alter the crystal structure, so a magnet will frequently stick to a spring stainless ring. That does not indicate the ring is not stainless.

Can I reuse an internal retaining ring?

Sometimes, if it came out cleanly. Check that the ring has returned to its free diameter, inspect the lug holes for elongation from plier pressure, and look for nicks at the groove contact faces. A ring that was over-compressed during removal will not spring fully back to the groove.

Why do internal rings have a tapered section?

So the exposed shoulder stays an even height all the way around. Without the taper, the ring would thin out near the lug ends and present less bearing surface exactly where the opening is, creating an uneven shoulder for the retained part.
