Can I use an inch E ring on a metric shaft?

Not reliably. The nearest inch size is usually off by enough that the prongs either bind before seating or sit loose in the groove with reduced contact at the groove bottom. A ring that does not seat fully is the most common reason rings pop out under thrust load.

What is DIN 471?

DIN 471 is the German standard covering external retaining rings and their groove dimensions for metric shafts. Its counterpart, DIN 472, covers internal rings for bores.
