Are stainless retaining rings as strong as carbon steel?

Slightly lower in thrust rating. Spring stainless does not reach the hardness of heat treated carbon spring steel, so an equivalent size carries somewhat less load. For most assemblies the margin is comfortable, and corrosion service is usually the deciding factor rather than the rating difference.

Are stainless retaining rings magnetic?

Usually somewhat, yes. The cold working and heat treatment that give a ring its spring properties change the crystal structure, so a magnet will often stick. That does not mean the ring is not stainless.

Can I use a stainless ring on a carbon steel shaft?

Yes, and it is a common pairing. Where moisture is present the carbon steel shaft corrodes preferentially at the contact point, so inspect the groove area during service intervals. In dry indoor use it is not a concern.

How much can an external retaining ring hold?

It varies with ring size, material, groove depth, and whether the load is static or dynamic. Groove depth is the factor most often underestimated, since a shallow groove lets the ring cam out well below its rated capacity. Can stainless retaining rings be reused?
