When do you want jaws at both ends?
When both anchor points are fixed and cannot open. A jaw's advantage is that it pins straight through a pad eye, lug, or bracket, which removes the shackle an eye end would need and takes a link out of the assembly. Fewer components means fewer things to inspect, fewer things to work loose, and a shorter overall assembly, which matters when the space between anchor points is tight. The tradeoff is the pin. A clevis pin is a wear item and a potential failure point in a way a closed loop is not, so it needs checking as part of routine inspection. Where an anchor point is a shackle or sling rather than a fixed lug, an eye end is the natural match.

What can a jaw end connect to?
Anything fixed that the pin can pass through: a pad eye, a lug, a bracket, a plate with a hole. What it cannot connect to easily is a sling, a soft eye, or another closed loop, since the jaw has to straddle whatever it pins to.
Should I check the clevis pin?
Yes, as part of routine inspection. The pin is the wear point in a jaw end, and it carries the full load in double shear. Look for wear, elongation of the pin holes, and any deformation of the jaw itself.
What take-up should I choose?
Enough that your working tension sits around mid range, leaving room to tighten as the assembly settles. Longer take-up costs little and gives more adjustment, so err on the generous side where space allows.
Will carbon steel rust outdoors?
Yes. Plain carbon steel corrodes in outdoor exposure, and the clevis pin joint is where it shows first because moisture sits in it. Paint after installation, or specify hot dipped galvanized or 316 stainless for exterior work.
Can I use a jaw and jaw for overhead lifting?
Turnbuckles are designed for straight line tensioning, not for lifting. Overhead lifting requires equipment rated and marked for that purpose. Use these to tension a fixed assembly, not to raise a load.
Do these need locking?
On anything that vibrates or cycles, yes. Jam nuts or lock wire prevent the body rotating loose over time, which is standard rigging practice and worth doing on any permanent installation.
