Why ribs solve the spin-out problem
Spin-out is the failure that turns a five minute job into an hour. A smooth bodied insert holds by friction, and friction has a limit: torque the bolt hard enough, or set the insert in a hole a fraction oversize, and the whole insert starts rotating in the panel. At that point the bolt neither tightens nor comes out, because there is nothing holding the nut still. Drilling it out damages the hole. Ribs prevent it happening in the first place by cutting into the hole wall as the body swells, creating mechanical interlock instead of relying on friction. In sheet metal and softer panel material where friction has least to work with, that difference is decisive.

Do ribbed rivet nuts need a special hole?
No, a plain round drilled hole to the specified diameter. The ribs cut into the hole wall as the body expands, so no hex punch or shaped hole is needed. That is their advantage over half hex inserts.
Will ribbed inserts still spin?
They are far more resistant than smooth bodies, but nothing is absolute. An oversized hole or an under-set insert can still spin. Drill to specification and set the insert fully, and ribbed bodies handle normal torque without trouble.
Are ribbed inserts harder to install?
Marginally, since the ribs must cut into the hole wall, which takes slightly more setting force. In practice the difference is small and any correctly sized rivet nut tool handles them.
Stainless or aluminum?
18-8 stainless for steel panels, higher load, and corrosion resistance in marine or outdoor use. Aluminum for aluminum panels, where matching materials avoids galvanic corrosion around every hole.
Does the knurl damage the hole?
