A Shake nail, or shake & shingle nail, is used in wood shakes and wood shingles for both roofing and side wall applications. They are typically used for cedar shake applications. Shake nails feature large checkered heads to reduce hammer slippage while providing an increased bearing surface to support shakes and shingles. Shake nails also feature thin ring shanks for greater holding power while reducing wood splitting.
They have a high shear strength to resist forces that make a material's internal faces slide parallel past each other. Storms, hurricanes, and high winds can cause shear stress in materials. For these reasons, nails are recommended over screws for installing wood shakes and wood shingles as screws lack the needed shear strength to resist shear stress.
