Do you need a compartment box for your DIY set? Find it here!
Many DIYers and professionals prefer buying select taps and dies rather than complete prepackaged sets. This allows you to customize exactly the right pieces for the threading jobs you actually take on.
Save money and space by only buying the taps and dies you use often, instead of unnecessary items. Our experts can help you determine which are the must-have tools to include in your own tap and die kit.
Whether you are working on a small project at home or a large-scale industrial job, having the right tools is essential for success. Make your own tap and die set to have the right tools for your tasks. This way, you can be sure to have the sizes and types you need. Customizing can save time and frustration by helping you quickly find the right tool without searching through a large collection.
Additionally, purchasing individual taps and dies can be more cost-effective in the long run. Instead of buying a whole set, just get the tools you need for your work. This way, you can save money and avoid unused items. This not only saves you money upfront but also ensures that you are getting the most value out of your investment.

You use a tap and die set to cut new threads or clean up existing threads on fasteners, pipes, and parts. The taps create internal/female threads, while the dies cut external/male threads.
A typical set includes T-handle adapters, tap wrenches, dies, die stocks, drill bits, and screw pitch gauges for measuring threads. The pieces come in a blow molded case with foam padding.
To use a tap, start by drilling a hole that's slightly smaller than the tap diameter. Insert the tap and turn it clockwise while applying firm pressure. Use cutting fluid for easier threading. Go slowly and reverse the tap often to clear chips.
To use a die, apply cutting oil to the bolt or pipe end. Twist the die clockwise with steady pressure to create new male threads.
Now and then, back the die off to clear out metal filings. Go slowly to form full, even threads.
Use a die to create male threads on a bolt, rod or pipe end. Apply cutting oil and twist clockwise with steady pressure. Every so often back the die off to clear out metal filings. Go slowly to form full, even threads.
The steel sets can thread soft metals like aluminum, brass, mild steel and some harder alloys. Use special sets with cobalt dies for stainless steel.
