How to Install Hardwood Decking Plugs:

Printable Installation Guide

  1. Pre-drill a pilot hole with the 1/8" drill bit included for the initial screw. Be sure to drill deep enough to penetrate both the deck board and the underlying joist material.
  2. Use a 3/8 countersink bit to bore a hole approximately 1/4 to 3/8 deep (depending on your deck board thickness). This will allow each screw to be hidden by a hardwood plug. It is important that your countersink bit is sharp and leaves a clean edge, to ensure a smooth and unblemished application. (Note: The Drill and Drive Bit will combine these two steps for a faster installation process).
  3. Next, securely drive a deck screw down into the countersunk hole into the joist below. This will hold the board to the joist, while the plugs themselves provide the finished look.
  4. Place a small amount of wood glue (Gorilla Glue is included with this kit) on the surface of the countersunk hole to hold the plug as well as acting as a moisture barrier to seal the countersunk hole and screw.
  5. Insert a plug into the hole and tap it with a hammer so that it fits snugly into the hole. Wipe away any excess glue that may pop out. PRO TIP: Finding the wood grain and aligning the plug with the deck board grain will hide the plug as much as possible for a smoother finish.
  6. After the glue has dried, flush Cut any protruding hardwood plug material for a smooth deck surface. This can be done using a flush cut pull saw, a belt sander or an orbital sander with 80 to 120 grit sand paper.
