How to Apply Ipe Oil Hardwood Deck Finish:
Printable Ipe Oil Application Guide - A Printable Guide with Pictures
Step 1: Preparation
Appropriate surface preparation of exotic hardwoods is the secret to ideal finish overall performance. We recommend a treatment with Hardwood Cleaner and Hardwood Brightener prior to an Ipe Oil application. It is extremely crucial that the surface be thoroughly clean of all grime, mildew stains, loose grain fibers and other unknown material. Deck or hardwood siding surfaces need to be structurally solid plus completely dried out. The longevity of Ipe Oil™ could be reduced by a dirty or improperly prepared surface.
Check to be sure that the moisture content is below 15 percent. If it is not, wait a minimum of 2-4 days of exposure to dry weather. Use DeckWise® Wood Cleaner Part 1 with a firm fiber brush or possibly power wash (lightly) to remove the surface layer of all loose wood fibers, dirt, mildew stains and other foreign matter. Concerning newer and weather-beaten hardwood areas, a light sanding using 80-100 grit sand paper is suggested in order to open the wood pores for maximum penetration.
Step 2: Hardwood Oil Application
For the very best results when applying Ipe Oil™, utilize a high quality 3/8” nap roller, pad applicator or stain brush. When spraying, immediately back roll after each segment is covered to guarantee proper penetrative protection. To prevent overlap marks, begin at one edge and follow through towards the end of the wooden boards. Apply Ipe Oil™ to small areas and keep 2-3 boards wet at all times. Always rub oil into the wood boards parallel to the grain of the wood. Oil which does not soak in must be wiped off completely. For exterior home furniture hand apply the finish into the hardwood grain simply by using a soft cloth. Re-oil depending on sun exposure and traffic areas every Spring and Fall to ensure a luxurious finish.
Step 3: Cleanup and Disposal
Wash rollers, brushes, equipment, and steel wool with mineral spirits. Be sure to let air dry out of direct sunlight before disposal. Dispose of empty containers or unused oil finish in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines. Always keep the oil container closed when not in use. Soak application rags, lambswool, cloths, steel wool or any other materials in water immediately after use to prevent spontaneous combustion.
WARNING: Cloth rags and or ANY waste soaked materials with product such as Ipe Oil™ may spontaneously catch fire if incorrectly disposed of. After each use, immediately put cloths, steel wool and waste inside a sealed, water-filled metallic container. Dispose the container in accordance to local regulations.
