    Multi Grip Rivets

Rivets with a Wide Grip Range

Multi Grip Rivets can substitute conventional rivets in applications where the thickness of the riveted material varies. One Multi Grip Rivet has the grip range of different rivet sizes. This grip range allows for flexibility in design and a lower rivet inventory, as one size of multi grip rivet can be suitable for a variety of jobs, including mismatched holes. Each rivet can be used as an equivalent for at least three different rivet sizes.

Multi-Grip Pop Rivets are available in Aluminum alloy. The hat and mandrel are both either Aluminum, or Aluminum with a steel mandrel. Aluminum is commonly used because it is significantly less expensive, however it does not offer the same level of durability as stainless steel.

Multi-Grip Rivets are available in 1/8" and 3/16" diameters, in fastener callout sizes ranging from #4-1 through #6-12.

    Rivet Assortment Kits

    Aluminum POP Rivets

Aluminum assortment kits offer a variety of POP rivets, in closed or open end varieties, in a run of sizes. Aluminum rivets are perfect for securing aluminum materials together. When using aluminum, it is recommended to use the same material fastener to minimize the chances of galvanic corrosion from occurring. These kits both offer 6 popular sizes from #4-2 all the way to #6-8. In clear durable assortment containers, safely store and easily identify the size you need at a glance.

    Aluminum Pop Rivets

Also known as blind rivets or pull rivets, this type of rivet is used due to its efficiency and ease of use. Rivets are used because they are a quick and easy way to join two pieces of material together, and do not require threading making them ideal for use with thin metals and other thin application surfaces. Blind rivets require access to the installation surface from only one side, making them easy to install with the use of a rivet gun or hand riveter.

Aluminum blind rivets are commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, boating and metal fabrication industries due to the high strength-to-weight ratio of the metal. Aluminum Rivets in this selection feature an all aluminum design meaning that both the hat and mandrel of the rivet are made of aluminum unless designated otherwise.

Aluminum rivets are used for a variety of reasons besides weight as well. Aluminum as an alloy forms its own protective coating making it resistant to atmospheric corrosion and is generally less expensive than stainless steel fasteners of the same type. Aluminum is not magnetic, accepts paint well, and is non-staining. It can also be used for many electrical applications due to its high levels of conductivity. We recommend only using aluminum with aluminum to help prevent galvanic corrosion.

On an all aluminum blind rivet, both the hat and mandrel of the rivet have all of these qualities making these fasteners a versatile, durable, lightweight and inexpensive solution.

    Closed End Rivets

Closed End Rivets differ from a standard blind pop rivet due to their closed end which creates a watertight seal. Closed end rivets are used to attach materials quickly and efficiently. These rivets also boast a higher tensile strength than regular pop rivets.

Closed End Pop Rivets are often referred to as sealed blind rivets, or sealing rivets because they create a watertight seal when installed properly, making them a popular item in the boating and automotive industries. Closed end pop rivets also provide a complete mandrel retention which gives the sealed rivet a higher tensile strength and can be important in electronic and electrical applications.

    Painted Aluminum Rivets

    Dome Head

Painted aluminum dome rivets are available in Brown, Black and White varieties. Each of the color options are a paint finish on an all aluminum POP Rivet. Open end blind rivets are made from genuine fine-grade materials to insure consistent error free application from rivet to rivet. A special treatment applied to the rivet insures the mandrel will be encased by the rivet during application. These rivets ensure the quick joining of two materials while leaving behind a clean professional finish.

    Painted Colored Blind POP Rivets

Dome Head Open End Rivets in Various Colors

Painted dome blind rivets are available in many different color varieties including:

    • Black
    • White
    • Ivory
    • Slate Gray
    • Fabral Charcoal
    • Antique Bronze
    • Brown
    • Burgundy
    • Red
    • Crimson Red
    • Evergreen
    • Hartford Green

These rivets ensure the quick joining of two materials while leaving behind a clean professional finish.

Painted pop rivets come in corrosion resistant 304 Stainless Steel or lightweight Aluminum.

Aluminum rivets should never be used with stainless steel: Corrosion may occur.

    Cordless Rivet Guns

Cordless rivet guns are a growing trend due to their portability and ease of use. Cordless Riveters are ideal for applications that require more than a hand riveter, but where portability or space for an air compressor (for a pneumatic tool) are a concern. Cordless Riveters are battery operated, and are designed to deliver professional level performance without the footprint of a pneumatic tool.

How does a Cordless Riveter Work?

Cordless Rivet Guns feature internal pulling mechanisms that grip the mandrel, and pull it back until the rivet pops and fastens the materials together. Certain models feature a mandrel collector which collects the mandrels after the rivet is popped, while others pull the mandrel down, and then spit it back out after installation.

When would you Use a Cordless Riveter?

Cordless Rivet Guns are ideal for applications that require more speed and power than a standard hand riveter, but portability and space are a concern. Battery powered riveters deliver similar performance standards to a pneumatic rivet gun, but do not require an air compressor or hoses.

    Flat Rivets

Flat Rivets are used to connect two pieces of material quickly and efficiently. The hat of the rivet is almost inverted, with a 120 degree countersink in the integrated washer. A countersunk rivet is used in countersunk holes and once set is flush to the surface. They are used in tracks where the head will not protrude into sliding tracks or rollers.

Flat rivets have standard open ends. They are tubular, comprised of a hat and mandrel. When installed, the length of the mandrel is snapped off. Both the hat and mandrel are made of the same material.

Not sure what material you need? Check out our Material Guide to find the right material for your needs!

    Dome Head Tri-Fold Exploding Rivets

Tri-fold exploding rivets with a dome head sit above the installation surface once installed. The dome portion of the hat is rounded and provides a smooth finish after the mandrel is snapped off. Tri-fold rivets expand out in three directions as the mandrel is pulled into the hat of the rivet. These wings provide excellent hold against installation materials.

Dome head tri-fold rivets also come with an EPDM washer which is compressed against the hole as the rivet is riveted. Once installed the rubber washer fills any holes between the hat and hole of the rivet. This creates a watertight seal which makes these rivets popular in RV, Kayaks and automotive applications.

    Dome Head Blind Rivets

Dome head rivets are mainly used in applications where there is no access to the rear (blind side) of the joint. Domed head rivets are the most common type of rivets. Rivets have a two piece construction; one is called the rivet hat and mandrel. Both the hat and mandrel are pre-assembled and ready to use. Dome head rivets are installed by using a riveting tool to draw the mandrel which causes the body to deform and clamp down on the joint. Upon reaching the designed clamping force, the mandrel snaps and is discarded. The mandrel side of the rivet, once the mandrel is removed, will leave the domed head exposed. Rivet size and grip range is measured in installed length. IFI 114 Compliant.

Low Profile Flat Head Tri-Fold Exploding Rivets

Low Profile Flat Head Tri-Fold Rivets feature a flat head to run nearly flush with the installation surface, creating a clean finished look.

Tri-Fold Exploding Rivets are often used in the automotive, truck and trailer industries, as well as in sporting goods, RVs, appliances and plastic components. The Tri-Fold split tail creates three anchor points on the blind side of the rivet installation, which spreads the load over a wider area which makes Tri-Fold Rivets ideal for use with thin metals. Recessed Crown Dome Head Rivets retain the stem of the mandrel to provide a strong vibration resistant joint.

Recessed Crown Dome Head Tri-Fold Exploding Rivets

Recessed Crown Tri-Fold Rivets are similar to standard Dome Head Rivets, however they feature an indentation around the mandrel of the rivet which creates a neat, aesthetic finish once installed. This creates an overall lower profile head as well.

Bob: Welcome back to Albany County Fasteners - Fasteners 101. Today we're going to teach you about the different types of rivet tools. So let's get started.

So we're going to review rivet tools. This is your standard hand rivet tool. This is good for most installations of rivets all the way up to a #6. Nothing special about it. It's a hand tool. It's made for the DIY guy or the contractor that just puts in a couple of rivets every now and then or he's putting in a soffit and needs to install some rivets. Its mainly used for simple, easy installations.

This is a pneumatic rivet tool. You need to have an air source to supply air to it. You need about 80 pounds of air, 60 to 80 pounds. This is a great tool. It's fast. Great for production.

And then we have the big bolt cutter type. This is made for structural type rivets, 1/4 inch rivets or larger. You put your rivet in there and you snap that baby. This is for large rivets. Stainless or Aluminum, this will handle large rivets.

    And that's it.

Bob: Welcome back to Albany County Fasteners - Fasteners 101. I'm Bob and today I'm going to review and demonstrate this cordless Riveter. So let's get started.

I have here the model RK401CR. This is a Rivet King commercial professional Riveter. It comes with one battery, comes with one charger. You get the power cord, get the instruction manual, you get three-in-one wrenches. This has three different nuts that you can remove with this one wrench. It has three additional nozzles. There's one in there right now and it does (is compatible with) rivets from 3/32" to 3/16."

The battery here, slides in very easily. It has a quick release so you pop it right in. Pop it right off. Slides nicely into the charger. If it's plugged in, it will just start charging. This is actually nice because it just slides right in and it's quick to charge.

It probably weighs about, I don't know, four or five pounds I would say approximately. It's a nice unit. It's a well balanced unit.

What's really nice about this is that after the mandrel-I'll just demonstrate right here. You put your rivet in, this is a number 6 rivet, and I'm just going to pop it in and see what happens to the mandrel. It'll actually slide back and drop into the back and you can hear that. I'm just gonna drop them out now so you can see. Here are the broken mandrels. So you don't have to sit there and waste your time trying to pull it out of the nozzle that's it. Another one. There you go and another one. 1-2-3.

I'm now going to demonstrate it by having the rivets installed into steel. I'm going to now show you how fast this rivets.

So as you can see, it rivets very quickly. This was only for demonstration purposes. It does a nice job at riveting. It's very tight, it's clean and as you can see the mandrels are pulled out of the back. Very nice unit. It's a must-have if you use rivets on a regular basis, it's a nice tool.

Bob: Today we're going to demonstrate the use of this battery-operated BL18DR Proferred BBI Tool Riveter.

So I have this cordless riveter and it's pretty light. It's about 6.5 pounds. I put a new nozzle, new nose on the head. To handle a number 6 rivet. You can use this rivet tool up to a number 8. You can go pretty heavy with this cordless riveter. Comes with an 18 volt Ion battery. For quick charging. It comes with two batteries, the charger, and it comes with miscellaneous tools, and it comes with the nozzles.

It's pretty cool how this adjusts. You take the nozzle off, you change the actual nose. Unscrew the nose off to change for the different size of rivet that you are going to use. Then you just screw the nozzle right back on. The whole head just screws on and it has this head that adjusts.

So you don't have to do anything else on the inside other than slip your rivet in there after you put the correct nose on. I'm going to demonstrate right now for you the installation of a rivet.

Put it (the rivet) into the material and I'm going to hold the button. Done. Then it kicks it (the mandrel) out. So here's the mandrel and you can see in here is the rivet. Perfect.

Cordless. No pneumatic. No air required. Great for job sites. I'm gonna do another one for ya. Done. There we go.

I'm gonna just do one right now without having it inside the material. You can see it fastens very well. I'm doing this right now. You can see it pulls in, OOP! POP! and it spits the other one out.

Let me get another one. There you go, you can watch how this tool pulls it in. There ya go. That's the demonstration for the cordless riveter.

    What is a Pop Rivet?

    Pop Rivets

POP rivets are used to connect two pieces of material in a quick efficient manner with a hand riveter or pneumatic rivet gun. They are tubular and comprised of a hat and mandrel; the length of the mandrel is snapped off when installed. The hat and mandrel can also be made by the same material or a combination of two materials. Rivets are measured in installed grip range and length.

Trade Names: Blind, Domed Open End, Closed End, Countersunk, Large Flange Open End, Multi Grip and Structural Rivets

    Pop Rivets Installed in Steel

How many varieties of Blind Rivets are available?

The answer is MANY! See the list of available options and descriptions below:

    Open End

Open end create a fast and tight assembly, however they are not water tight. Open End Rivets get their name because the mandrel is exposed at the bottom of the rivet prior to installation. Open end are available in stainless steel, aluminum and zinc plated steel. Color options are available in Aluminum for this type.

    Closed End

Closed End POP Rivets differ from a standard pop rivet in that they feature a flat, closed end which creates a watertight seal. Also known as a waterproof rivet, they are distinguished by their flat top. The mandrel is encased within the blind rivet itself.

    Countersunk

A countersunk blind rivet, also known as a Flat Rivet, is used in countersunk holes and once set, finish flush to the surface. They are used in tracks where the head will not protrude into sliding tracks or rollers. The hat of the rivet is almost inverted, with a 120 degree countersink in the integrated washer.

    Large Flange

Large flange, also known as Oversized, have a larger washer on the hat than standard. Large Flange Rivets are tubular, comprised of a hat and mandrel; the length of the mandrel is snapped off when installed.

    Multi Grip

Multi Grip Rivets can substitute in applications where the thickness of the riveted material varies. One Multi Grip Rivet has the grip range of different sizes. This grip range allows for flexibility in design and a lower rivet inventory, as one size of Multi Grip rivet can be suitable for a variety of jobs, including mismatched holes. One Multi Grip Rivet can be used as an equivalent for at least three different rivet sizes.

    Tri-Fold / Exploding

Tri-Fold Rivets sre designed to create three anchor points on the blind side of the installation. This creates a wider bearing load spread which is ideal for thin metals and plastics. Tri-Fold Rivets are commonly used in automotive, trailer and appliance applications.

    Structural / Interlock

Structural, or, interlock blind rivets in stainless steel. Interlock pop rivets create a stronger assembly than standard stainless steel, because of the amount of force that they generate. Domed head rivets in this selection are commonly referred to as both Interlock and Structural Rivets.

Bob: Welcome back to Albany County Fasteners - Fasteners 101. I'm Bob and today we're going to talk about the different types of rivets available and the materials they come in. So, let's get started.

So, let's review the different materials available and types of rivets. This is a structural rivet. This particular rivet is steel and steel. The mandrel is steel, and the hat is steel. This is what they call a blind rivet.

These three are aluminum rivets. These are just typical pop or blind rivets, in aluminum. We also have what we call a white hat rivet with an aluminum mandrel. So, here's the mandrel and that's the white hat, so when you put the rivet in and complete it all you're gonna see is a white finish like for a white soffit or a brown soffit. They come in different colors depending upon the finish that you're installing them in.

These are zinc plated rivets. These are large flange. You can see here, the large dome flange on this hat. So it covers more surface when you're installing. These are copper/brass rivets. The mandrel is brass and the hat is copper.

These are copper rivets (with a copper hat and copper plated mandrel. A lot of roofers use these rivets for flashing and many other applications, soffits, downspouts. So many different applications for the brass.

These are stainless blind pop rivets. I have several different types and this is what we call a closed end pop rivet. You can see here the back is square and solid. These are waterproof, so if you install these in a water application, these will not leak or build water up inside the tubular part of the rivet.

These are also stainless countersunk pop rivets. You'll see that there's a, I believe it's a 33 degree hat, on here. So when you install this rivet it will be flush with the material. So, these are installed in a lot of things like tracks, that you're, putting a rail in or something along that that you just don't want any type of head sticking up.

Then we have what we call multi-grip rivets. With multi-grip, they're based upon increments of 2. So a multi-grip will go from: 4-2, 4-4 and 4-6. So it will cover three different lengths. That's why they call them multi-grip rivets.

And that's basically the materials that blind pop rivets come in and the different types of rivets.

For more information on rivets including numbers (6-6 or 66), measurements, how to install rivets, grip range and more, please review our Rivet Guide in Fasteners 101.

    Shave Rivets

    water tight shaveable rivets

Water Tight Shaveable Rivets are a type of bulb rivet designed with an unusual mandrel. The mandrel on a shaveable rivet's mandrel does not break off entirely on installation. Instead, a portion of the mandrel is broken off and remains in the hat. Then, a rivet shaving tool is used to shave down what is left of the mandrel. This leaves a smooth head surface without the typical hole in the middle that is common on blind rivets.

    Water Tight Shaveable Rivets

Water tight shaveable rivets have a built-in rubber (EDPM) washer attached at the base of the hat. As the rivet is installed the rubber washer will be pushed against the hole it is being installed into. The rubber will expand and fill the hole of any gaps to create a water-tight seal. These are a common choice for RVs and trailers as replacements for the factory rivets that come loose from natural wear and tear.

Bob: Welcome back to Albany County Fasteners - Fasteners 101. Today I'm going to demonstrate the installation and shaving of a shave rivet. Let's get started.

So I have here a piece of pre-drilled steel. I have a couple of shaved rivets. These are tri-fold exploding rivets. This particular rivet has a washer on it so, if you need waterproofing for a trailer, you can get them with the neoprene washer against the backside to prevent any leaking into the trailer.

I'm going to insert the rivet. I have my rivet tool and you don't install these like a normal rivet. You don't keep cranking the rivet tool until it snaps, but you do want to snug it up to the backside and I'm going to show you.

As you can see here, that's correctly installed. That is incorrectly installed. You can see that it's not totally up against the backside. So you want to make sure that you install the rivet properly so you have a nice tight fit.

Then I'm going to take my snips and then leave about a 1/2 inch and I'm going to snip these off. That's a little bit more than a half an inch.

I'm going to take my shaver, these shavers you have to select the correct bit along with the correct crown to shave off this mandrel properly. It's a little tricky so you have to learn as you go.

You just gotta go a little bit at a time. Can't just push down on it hard. That's it right there. Look at that! Very nicely finished. Nice-looking product.

That's your backside. That's your tri-fold, also collapsing as they say, because the rivet collapses on the backside and on the outside of your trailer or whatever your riveting for a finished look. That's the key there.

These tools are they range in price anywhere from, you know, two hundred and some odd dollars. Maybe $299 and they can go up to seven or even $1,000. I bought the cheapest one to be frank with you. This is $299. It does the trick, it's a good product.

    Thanks for watching!

Stainless steel rivets are used to connect two pieces of material in a quick efficient manner with a hand riveter or pneumatic rivet gun. They are tubular and comprised of a hat and mandrel; the length of the mandrel is snapped off when installed. All stainless steel pop rivets feature both a stainless steel hat and a stainless steel mandrel.

Also known as Blind Rivets, Pop Rivets are measured by rivet diameter and installed grip range. Because of this, rivets have actual measurement sizes, as well as nominal sizes made up of two numbers. For example, a 1/8 inch diameter rivet is commonly called a 4 for the first number. A rivet with a 1/8” grip range is assigned a 2 as the second number. This means that a 1/8 inch diameter rivet with a 1/8 inch grip range is referred to as a “4-2” or “42”.

    Steel Pop Rivets

Also known as blind rivets or pull rivets, this type of rivet is used due to its efficiency and ease of use. Rivets are used because they are a quick and easy way to join two pieces of material together, and do not require threading making them ideal for use with thin metals and other thin application surfaces. Blind rivets require access to the installation surface from only one side, making them easy to install with the use of a rivet gun or hand riveter.

Steel Pop Rivets are treaded with a Zinc Plating for added resistance to weather and the elements.

    Tri-Fold Exploding Rivets

Tri Bulb Rivets are a special kind of rivet. They are often referred to as exploding rivets due to the way they expand, and also tri tite, bulb tite, and olympic rivets. These rivets have three notches cut into the body of the rivet. They are installed much like a pop rivet, using a riveter to pull the mandrel towards the hat. As the mandrel is pulled in towards the hat, the three sections bend forming three legs. These three legs hold tightly onto the installation surface. Tri-fold rivets break off at the head much like a typical pop rivet will.

Bulb rivets come in many varieties. Weather tight bulb rivets come with an attached EDPM (rubber) washer set at the base of the hat. When installed these hats push the washer into the pre-drilled hole forming a watertight seal.

Tri-grip rivets have added benefits in terms of strength and clamping as well. The three legs that protrude from these rivets are used to better distribute pressure over a surface area. This means, more pressure can be applied to the material without causing damage to it. They also keep a larger portion of the mandrel inside of the body. This added material can help to cure the weaker shear strength of typical blind rivets.

Tri-fold fasteners are also prized for their larger multi-grip capabilities. Due to the way the legs are formed during the installation process, the rivet can grab earlier thus making its range much greater than that of a blind rivet. They also work very well where the back of the installation material is not flat. The legs on these rivets will conform to the edges of the material when pulled against it.

These rivets are used in many heavy-duty applications but are most commonly found in trailer or RV repair.
