Joist Hangers are metal angles or straps used to support and fix wood or timber joists' ends to beams or girders. They are typically used to help form the floor on decking applications and are attached to the deck's ledger board, anchoring themselves and the joists to the deck framing. Joist Hangers wrap around three sides of a joist forming the parallel pattern often seen that make up deck floors before being covered.
In decking applications, the height of a joist hanger should match the joist's depth being used. The number of holes in a given joist hanger dictates the number of nails expected to be used to make a secure connection. Also, deck joist hangers are designed with special holes for Double-Shear nailing, or "toe-nailing," to provide a reliable connection to the joists being fastened. If installed correctly, joist hangers will keep decks and floors strong as the wood dries, twists, shrinks, and ages.
It is not recommended to mix metals during application. For example, a stainless steel joist hanger should be used with the same grade of stainless steel nails. In addition, only nails should be used when installing joist hangers.

Joist hangers are plenty strong enough to support most applications, so long as the correct nails are used to fasten them. Be sure to use the aptly named joist hanger nails to ensure the joist hangers are properly secured to the joists they support.
Only screws made specifically for joist hangers can be used. Any other kind of screw is not rated to support the loads that joist hangers handle.
Typically yes. Most building codes call for the use of joist hangers to attach joists to the ledger board. They are sometimes not required if the joist is resting on a drop beam and nails are driven through the header into the joist. However, most inspectors may want to see joist hangers still installed.
Joist hangers are used to strengthen a load-bearing connection. If installed correctly, they will contribute to a deck's load-bearing ability.
Absolutely. Correctly sized and installed joist hangers will provide a deck the necessary load support, uplift capacity, and lateral rotation resistance. They are easily one of the most important components of deck building.
In the bulk of applications, yes. Joist hangers are preferable to both toe-nailing and end-nailing. They provide greater shear force support to the joist and make joist installation simpler since they hold the joists in place as you fasten them.
